“Volunteering makes you look at the world differently. You see how little things can change a person’s life for the better, which makes everyone a better person,” Mason, a volunteer said.

National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect opportunity to encourage others to take their first step toward becoming a volunteer. Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because people often wonder if they will be able to meet the organization’s expectations(期望). Some people fear not knowing anyone else in the group. Not having enough time also prevents some of them from sharing their abilities.

The following tips can help if you have some of these worries.

★Start out slowly; don’t push yourself too hard. Even a few hours a month can make a big difference to someone’s life.

★Choose an organization with the same interests and common values.

★Take part in a training meeting for new volunteers, even if it is not asked.

★Work with a veteran volunteer. He volunteered a lot, and he can help you increase the confidence and completely understand the organization’s expectations.

★Invite a friend or family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them

★Finally, it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience and to remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If one experience doesn’t work, don’t give up and you’ll surely find the right opportunity.

Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great changes in people’s lives. As Mason discovered during his volunteer experience, “… little things can change a person’s life.”

March 25 is called the National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students

(NDESEMSS全国中小学生安全教育日). The theme of the day this year is to give students more knowledge about safety and make sure that their lives are safe.

A survey done by the China Youth and Children Research Center showed that school accidents kill more elementary and middle school students than anything else. The main accidents come from stampedes(踩踏),earthquakes, fires and sports injuries(伤害).

What can we do to keep ourselves safe. Staying calm(镇静) is the first and most important rule when facing accidents. But different incidents have different self-protection advice.

A stampede is possible anywhere. The larger a human crowd gets, the more likely stampedes become. When students around you begin to push, stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If you fall down in a moving crowd, cover your head with both hands.

Earthquakes are common natural disasters(灾害). When you feel the ground shake, drop down, take cover under a desk and hold on. You should stay indoors until the shaking stops. If you are outdoors, don’t stay near buildings, trees or power lines.

When there’s a fire, follow the teachers’ instructions, leave the classroom quickly and use a piece of wet cloth to cover your mouth and nose so that you don’t breathe in smoke.

56.The theme of NDESEMSS this year is to give students more knowledge about ______ .

Fraser Island is in Queensland, Australia, about 200 kilometres north of Brisbane. It is about 120 kilometres long and its area is up to 1,630 square kilometres. It is a very special island because it is completely made of sand. In fact, it is the largest sand island in the world. There is no airport on the island, but there is a long beach along the east coast. Planes arrive and leave from here.

The sand makes unusual shapes. There are hills made of sand called sand dunes(沙丘).Nothing grows on them. At other places on the island, the sandy rocks(小石子)have different colours. Sometimes the rocks are brown and they turn the sea brown, like coffee.

Surprisingly, the sandy island has a lot of different plants and animals. There are dark forests, beautiful flowers and more than a hundred lakes. There are many kinds of birds living there.

About 500,000 people visit the island every year to see the island’s beauty. People enjoy camping and hiking there. Unluckily, the visitors bring problems. They damage(毁坏)plants and make animals afraid. Now, the government has made many rules for visitors. For example, people may not use motor boats or go fishing in the lakes, and they need official papers to drive there.

How to Deal with the Waste

Waste is everywhere around us. If we don’t deal with it properly, the environment will be polluted and there will be rubbish wherever we go! And our life will become terrible.

So how can we deal with the waste? One good way is to give away things we don’t need to those who need them. For example,we can collect used books and clothes and give them to the poor children in the villages. Another way is to help recycle things. We can collect used steel and plastic and take them to the recycling center instead of throwing them away.

The waste problem is becoming more and more serious. Whoever lives on this planet should play a part in dealing with it. Let’s try together to make our world a better place.

Dear Tom,

I’m really glad that you are interested in my home town. And I’d like to introduce it to you. My home town is Guangzhou in Guangdong Province. It’s a beautiful city that is in the south of China, and it is named as the Flower City. The main streets are wide and clean, which are sometimes crowded with cars. There are a number of trees and flowers by the roadsides, which make the city green and beautiful.

If you come to my home town, I will take you to visit the Baiyun Mountain, Canton Tower and other tourist attractions. I think Canton Tower is the most beautiful building, especially at night. Besides the scenery, the food in Guangzhou is very famous in China, especially the soup and morning tea. I believe you will love it.

All in all, I think Guangzhou is a city worth visiting. So I really hope that you can come for a visit.
