Collaboration between Early Years students and Grade 1-5 students is always special. On Tuesday CISH students had the opportunity for such a collaboration. Grade 3, 4 and 5 students went to Early Years building to read stories and be ‘Reading Buddies” to K1 – K3 students.

At first some of the students in K1, K2 and K3 were surprised to have bigger students in their classrooms. They soon warmed up and engaged in the stories. Teachers had paired one or two students together to do the reading. Some classes started playing and interacting with each other once they had finished reading their stories. Some students were paired up with a student that has the same native language as them. Students were able to read English, Chinese, Korean and German books to younger learners.

When older students read to younger students they learn to observe a peer model and listen to fluent reading. They interact over the content of the book, develop comprehension and understanding and discuss vocabulary. This helps build confidence in the older and younger students. Older students have the opportunity to act as mentors and practice leadership skills.

This was a wonderful enriching activity that we look forward to repeating again this school year.
